Oliver Twist By Charles Dickens

Today we had movie screening of Oliver Twist in Department. We recently studied this novel. So this movie is really helpful to understand this novel in deep. This novel is written by Charles Dickens. First of all I would like to write something about this novel. This novel is 400 pages too long. Charles Dickens wrote this in the 1800's and it is set in England...mainly London.
The characters are good, kind rich people and the dirty nasty poor people. Oliver Twist is an orphan. When this book was first published , it caused bit of satire because of the character. They were poor people, thieves, prostitutes and murderers.
Dickens uses the book to show how bad the situation is for a lot of people living in England at the time and also take some shots at the judicial system.
Let us look major characters of this novel.

Major Characters of Oliver Twist :

1) Oliver Twist : He is the main character. Hence the title of the book. A little orphan boy whose life is full of trouble.

2) Fagin : The Jew. He is the leader of a gang of thieves.

3) John Dawkins : The artful dodger. A young pick-pocket. He is a thief in Fagin's gang.

4) Bill Sikes : A mean and brutal house robber.

5) Mr. Brownlow : A nice guy who looks after Oliver for a while.

6) Mr. Bumble : The pariah Beadle who plays a role in Oliver's early life.

7) Nancy : A prostitute who is part of Fagin's group. She is nice lady. She wants to help Oliver. She hooks up with Bill Sikes later and gets killed.

8) Noah Claypole : A kid who works with Oliver early one in the movie. He is a real Jerk and always picks on Oliver.

So these are the major characters of this novel. Now here I am sharing my views on movie and brief summary of Oliver Twist.

When Oliver is born his mother dies so he is orphan child who gets beaten and treated terribly. He sent to an orphan age. One day, he asks for more food at dinner and he is thrashed and thrown out of the public workhouse he was staying at. He goes to work for an undertaker named Mr. Sowerberry who has this employee named Noah Claypole. Noah picks on Oliver and one day makes fun of his mother. So Oliver get a angry and beat Noah. Mrs. Sowerberry , Noah and Noah's girl Charlotte all make up this  story about how Oliver tried to kill everyone. So Mr. Sowerberry beats him real bad. Oliver decides to run away to London.

Oliver makes it to London barely. Remember, he is a little kid. He makes it to London where he is sucked in by the Jew, Fagin. They guy who gets him is Jack Dawkins. Oliver doesn't know they are crooks but he needed a place to stay. The stays with them for a while and Fagin teaches him how to pick-pocket as if it was a game.

Oliver goes out with Master Bates and Dodger and watches them pick-pocket this guy (Mr. Brownlow) . Oliver gets caught though and is dragged to the police station but is let off. He is very sick so Mr. Brownlow takes him to his home. Fagin is going to be very very mad. Oliver gets healthy again Mr. Brownlow sees something familiar about Oliver but doesn't know what.

One day Oliver is doing an errand for Mr. Brownlow and he runs into Nancy and Bill. They grab him and take him back to Fagin. Then Bill Sikes uses Oliver in a house robbery. It all goes bad and Oliver is shot Bill escapes with the other thieves but Oliver is left behind. Oliver goes back to the house where Mr. May lie and Rose Maylie live. But there is no reference of Mr. Maylie and Rose Maylie.

Fagin started to threaten Oliver about being hung by telling him what it is like. Oliver is made to en Dodger's boots. Fagin goes to visit Bill. They are discussing a future robber that Bill is staking out. Bill needs a small boy to help in the robbery. Fagin suggests Oliver to Bill place for a while and to watch our Bill a baaaaad man. Nancy comes to pick up Oliver. Oliver arrives at Bill's house. Bill holds a gun to Oliver's head and says if he ever talks, he will blow his brain out. Bill takes Oliver on a trip to meet up with the other burglars. Bill is in the house with Toby & Barney. They talk about how Oliver's looks of such a good criminal. They nap for a bit , but then leave to go rob the house. It's really dark out. Oliver start asking to be let go, but he is told to shut up. There is a little tiny window, which is easily opened , and Oliver is told to go in and open the door. Si here we can see that how that little kid is forced to rob the house. Oliver thinking about alerting the family when Bill calls him back. Two man from the house are awake and shoot Oliver in the arm.

Nancy want's to help Oliver , so she went to the Mrs. Brownlow and told to give massage to Mr.  Brownlow that Oliver is safe and told him to meet her tonight at London Bridge to know further about Oliver.

Fagin know that there is something wrong with Nancy and he told Noah to follow Nancy and to keep his eyes on her. Noah follows Nancy and he is going to know that Nancy gave information about Oliver to someone. Noah tells this all things to Bill and Fagin. After listening this Bill was getting very angry and decide to kill  Nancy. He went to Nancy's house and killed her. But as we say that whatever we do we cannot hide our crimes for longer. Somehow the police know that Bill killed Nancy and at the end Bill died.

So here a brief summary according to my understanding. Here we can say that the major theme in this movie or we can say in this novel is Crime does not pay. Everyone who is a criminal ends up either dying or going to jail. Only Master Beates, who comes clean really gets respect. Noah even though he is pardoned.

Although the theme in this book of criminals being bad people is there, the book focuses on the criminals.

This movie also is meant to look at the horrible conditions people live in when they are poor. The kids who were orphan are beaten and people are starved. It's very much a social commentary. The book is called 'Oliver Twist' and it's about Oliver Twist , but it really seems like Oliver is such an passive character. He only does few things on his own. When he asks for more food.

With all the very "real" characters in this book like the Dodger and Fagin. It is very odd to have the main character so fake. At last I drawn readers  attention that here we can also see the theme of Women inferiority. We can see that Nancy want's to help Oliver but she is like servent for Bill. She is not free to take her own decisions. In our society people or we can specify that men believed that still women are inferior then man.

So it's my view regarding this movie.
